Uranium Health Studies:
General Population Studies

  • Few studies of community or family health have been done in the last 50+ years of uranium mining on Navajo lands, with two exceptions:
  • Shiprock birth defects study — Shields, et al., 1992
    • increased incidence of birth defects in children born to Navajo women in Shiprock S.U.
    • weak association with mother living near uranium mill tailings or mine waste dumps
  • "Navajo Neuropathy" — Rosen and Mushak, 2000
    • progressive deterioration of central nervous system from excessive exposure to heavy metals, radionuclides;
    • onset in early childhood; observed in 37 Navajos
