Uranium Health Studies:
Environmental Assessments

  • Abandoned ("inactive") uranium mills —
    • Reclamation completed at 4 Navajo sites: Shiprock, Monument Valley, Mexican Hat, Tuba City
    • Groundwater restoration continuing at all 4 sites
    • Remediation finished, groundwater restoration continuing at UNC-Church Rock Mill (a USEPA Superfund site)
  • Puerco River —
    • 20+ years mine dewatering; July '79 tailings spill (largest release, by volume, of radioactive wastes in U.S. history)
    • Radionuclide levels elevated in runoff (USGS, 1994); difficult discerning mining effects from natural runoff
