Uranium Health Studies, Underground Miners (cont'd):
Respiratory Disease Risk Factors

  • Radon radon + radon daughters —> attach to dust particles, deposit in lung —> leads to lung cancer:
    • "The causal association between exposure to radon progeny and lung cancer has been firmly established" — Samet and Mapel, EOM, 1998
  • Longer miner worked, the greater risk of contracting lung cancer or nonmalignant respiratory diseases
  • Smoking increased miners' risks, but nonsmoking miners, especially the Navajos, also had increased risk
